Colour, Light & Movement

Once you have seen Gaudi's work, it is unmistakable. His use of colour and light is remarkable and the forms, which seen through Australian eyes, seem to be fantastical and over the top, became for me a beautiful expression of freedom and fluidity of creativity and function combined. Many of Gaudi's creations were highly ergonomic, with each piece of furniture being hand crafted to fit the space it was designed for. It was surprising to me to find that although he was an architect, Gaudi designed and often hand made specific pieces for the buildings he designed eg chairs, door handles etc. His is an amazing legacy that I have come to admire greatly. Below are some more photos of his wonderfully creative works.

The colour in the first photo (inside the Sagrada Familia Basilica) is due to the intensity of the stained glass windows. As the sun moved, the light changed through the spectrum and made the internal stone work seem to be made of different stone. It was a truly magical place.

  1. Thanks for this post and photos, Frances! David watched a program on SBS about Gaudi's work and he is so keen to go to Barcelona and see it for himself. I'll certainly be sharing your photos with him!
