Part of the story of Don Quijote brings us the term "tilting at windmills" - meaning a senseless or useless activity. In the story, Don Quijote mistakes the windmills for giants and goes off to fight them, obviously not succeeding in subduing them as they still dot the landscape in considerable numbers.
